A Kumato® tomato is not an ordinary tomato. It is a unique variety of tomato that is extremely sweet and has a strong distinctive taste that changes as the tomato colour moves from green to brown to dark red. It's super versatile, and has different ideal usages at each stage - from a firm slicing tomato, through to super sweet for cooking. It can be eaten through it's three ripening stages, providing a different flavour & texture experience at each.
Here's how you can identify the ripening stage of a Kumato® tomato, and how you can use them at that particular stage.
Look: The Kumato® tomato is firm, shiny with the majority of it's skin green in colour. The base of the tomato is just starting to turn brown.
Flavour: A sharp but pleasant tomato flavour.
Storage: Store on the bench / countertop with natural light.
Usage: Great for pickling, crumbing and frying. Or make into a chutney, or add to a grazing platter or cheese plates.
Look: The Kumato tomato skin is deep brown in colour, with hints of green especially at the top / shoulder.
Flavour: This is considered the ideal stage for eating a Kumato® tomato. It has the right balance of sweet & acidic/sharp making it suitable for a variety of recipes.
Storage: Store on the bench for up to 5 days.
Usage: Great for sandwiches, salads and pasta. Or used for stuffing, roasting, and sauces.
Look: At this stage, the Kumato® tomato colour changes from deep brown to dark red. There's almost no green colour.
Flavour: The flavour is sweet and juicy.
Storage: Store on the bench and use within 2-3 days
Usage: Perfect for cooking at this stage.
